Galvanized Iron (GI) Pipes are hollow tubes made of mild steel that have been coated with a protective layer of zinc to prevent rust and corrosion.

Core Characteristics

  • Corrosion Resistance: The zinc coating acts as a physical barrier and a "sacrificial anode," meaning it corrodes first to protect the underlying steel, even if the pipe is scratched.
  • Manufacturing: These pipes are made from low-carbon steel strips that are rolled into a circular shape, welded at the seams, and then either hot-dip galvanized (immersed in molten zinc) or electro-galvanized.
  • Durability: GI pipes have higher impact and abrasion resistance than standard steel because the zinc-steel alloy is harder than the base metal.

Classification by Grade

In India, GI pipes are commonly classified under standard IS 1239 and are color-coded at the ends to indicate their wall thickness and weight.

Class          Color Code       GaugeCommon Applications
Class A Yellow Light Low-pressure uses like fencing, electrical conduits, and internal plumbing.
Class B Blue Medium General plumbing, municipal water distribution, and agricultural irrigation.
Class C Red Heavy High-pressure industrial pipelines, fire sprinkler systems, and structural scaffolding.

Primary Applications

  • Water Supply: Widely used in rural water schemes and domestic plumbing for both raw and treated water distribution.
  • Structural & Construction: Essential for building frameworks, railings, support structures, and telecommunication towers.
  • Agriculture: Ideal for borewells, sprinkler systems, and greenhouse frames due to their weather resistance.
  • Industrial: Used for transporting non-potable liquids, gases, and chemicals in factories and oil/gas plants.
