A copper braided strip is a highly flexible electrical conductor formed by weaving together numerous fine strands of high-purity copper. Unlike solid copper bars, these strips can endure repeated flexing and vibration without failing, making them ideal for dynamic electrical systems.

Technical Construction
  • Material: Typically manufactured from 99.9% pure electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper.
  • Stranding: Comprised of individual wire filaments ranging from 0.05 mm to 0.30 mm in diameter.
  • Formation: Thin wires are wound on high-speed spools in a circular design to form a braid, which is then flattened by weight rollers to achieve a rectangular strip shape.

Key Characteristics
  • Extreme Flexibility: The lattice-like weave allows the strip to bend and twist in multiple directions without cracking or losing efficiency.
  • High Conductivity: The dense packing of strands provides a large effective surface area, which improves current-carrying capacity and minimizes energy loss.
  • Mechanical Durability: Specifically designed to absorb mechanical shocks and resist metal fatigue better than solid conductors in high-vibration environments.
  • Thermal Performance: Functions as an effective heat sink, rapidly dissipating localized heat generated at connection points.

Common Variations
  • Bare Copper: Offers maximum conductivity but is susceptible to oxidation in humid environments.
  • Tinned Copper: Coated with a thin layer of tin to provide superior resistance to corrosion and oxidation, making it ideal for marine or industrial settings.
  • Insulated Strips: Often covered with PVC, silicone, or PTFE to prevent short circuits and offer mechanical protection.

Applications -
  • Power Distribution: Serving as flexible busbars or connectors in transformers and switchgear to accommodate thermal expansion or misalignment.
  • Automotive: Used as battery grounding straps and engine bonds that can withstand engine vibration.
  • Grounding Systems: Providing low-resistance paths for lightning protection and fault currents.
  • EMI/RFI Shielding: Acting as a barrier to block unwanted electromagnetic signals in sensitive electronics.

A braided copper strip (also known as a flat copper braid or ground strap) is a highly flexible electrical conductor made by interweaving multiple thin strands of high-purity copper into a flat, ribbon-like structure. Unlike solid copper bars, these strips are engineered to withstand continuous vibration and repeated bending without cracking or losing conductivity

Key Features and Specifications
  • Material: Typically made from Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) grade copper or oxygen-free copper.
  • Finishes: Available in bare copper (natural rose gold colour) or tinned copper (silver appearance) for enhanced corrosion and oxidation resistance.
  • Flexibility: The "lattice" design allows movement in multiple axes, making it ideal for tight or irregular spaces.
  • Heat Dissipation: The large surface area of the woven strands allows for better cooling compared to solid conductors of the same cross-section.
  • Dimensions: Commonly available in widths from 4 mm to 75 mm and thicknesses from 0.6 mm to 6 mm.

Common Applications
  • Earthing and Grounding: Used as grounding straps to provide a low-resistance path for fault currents in buildings, vehicles, and laboratories.
  • Flexible Connectors: Acts as a bridge between moving parts, such as connecting busbars to transformers, generators, or circuit breakers to absorb mechanical shock.
  • EMI/RFI Shielding: Used in telecommunications and computer rooms to protect sensitive equipment from electromagnetic interference.
  • Industrial Machinery: Found in locomotives, wind turbines, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations where thermal expansion and vibration occur.
