A braided copper strip (also known as a flat copper braid or ground strap) is a highly flexible electrical conductor made by interweaving multiple thin strands of high-purity copper into a flat, ribbon-like structure. Unlike solid copper bars, these strips are engineered to withstand continuous vibration and repeated bending without cracking or losing conductivity
Key Features and Specifications
- Material: Typically made from Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) grade copper or oxygen-free copper.
- Finishes: Available in bare copper (natural rose gold colour) or tinned copper (silver appearance) for enhanced corrosion and oxidation resistance.
- Flexibility: The "lattice" design allows movement in multiple axes, making it ideal for tight or irregular spaces.
- Heat Dissipation: The large surface area of the woven strands allows for better cooling compared to solid conductors of the same cross-section.
- Dimensions: Commonly available in widths from 4 mm to 75 mm and thicknesses from 0.6 mm to 6 mm.
Common Applications
- Earthing and Grounding: Used as grounding straps to provide a low-resistance path for fault currents in buildings, vehicles, and laboratories.
- Flexible Connectors: Acts as a bridge between moving parts, such as connecting busbars to transformers, generators, or circuit breakers to absorb mechanical shock.
- EMI/RFI Shielding: Used in telecommunications and computer rooms to protect sensitive equipment from electromagnetic interference.
- Industrial Machinery: Found in locomotives, wind turbines, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations where thermal expansion and vibration occur.
